Who we are

Two operators, opposite sides of the same table.

A consolidated service center is a commercial instrument that sits between a health system and its manufacturers. Doing the work well takes knowing both sides, the health system's operating economics and the manufacturer's cost-to-serve, at a depth most firms never reach. Most firms staff one side. Six Peaks was built to staff both.

The firm

James came from the distributor and third-party logistics side. He developed the Integrated Service Center model at a Fortune 500 medical-surgical distributor and led global strategic marketing at two third-party logistics providers, then spent fifteen years advising health systems, manufacturers, distributors and GPOs on direct supply models. Mike came from the manufacturer side, with ten years inside Johnson & Johnson's supply chain, then operated inside a live health system CSC and led the healthcare business of a global 3PL.

Between them they have sat on every side of the table a CSC engagement requires: manufacturer, distributor, 3PL and self-distributor. We have worked with health systems of all sizes on their CSC models, from first assessment through implementation and rescue. That is the firm. All Things CSC is a practice of Six Peaks Consulting, LLC.

Co-founder

James Grieger

James developed the Integrated Service Center model at Owens & Minor and has led more than 25 strategic CSC assessments and eight implementations since, across U.S. health systems and the UK's National Health Service.

James came to healthcare from industrial manufacturing and global logistics. His first operating role was directing U.S. physical distribution for Océ, the Netherlands-based manufacturer of imaging equipment, where he rebuilt a network of 25 distribution centers from fixed to variable cost, cut finished-goods distribution cost by more than 20%, improved order cycle times by 60%, and set up Océ's U.S. export operation. He then led global strategic marketing and corporate development at two third-party logistics providers, designing non-asset-based logistics and global freight forwarding at network scale. Running a manufacturer's distribution network taught him the levers a manufacturer pulls to lower its cost-to-serve, which is the knowledge he now teaches health system teams, so that their LSA negotiations are a trade rather than a guess.

At Owens & Minor, the Fortune 500 medical-surgical distributor, he was Vice President of Third-Party Logistics. He built the company's third-party logistics business and the Integrated Service Center model, the provider-centric self-distribution design that became the template for what the industry now calls the CSC. He then spent fifteen years as an independent advisor on the justification, design and development of direct supply models, consolidated service centers and shared service organizations, including rescue engagements at CSCs that were not producing what their business cases promised.

James and Mike work every engagement together, combining James's distributor, third-party logistics and manufacturing-network experience with Mike's manufacturer and CSC operating experience. James works from the Reno-Tahoe area.

Co-founder

Michael Wentling

Mike spent a decade inside Johnson & Johnson's global supply chain, ran the operations of a live health system CSC, and led the healthcare business of a global 3PL. He has sat on the manufacturer's side of the table most supply chain consultants have never seen.

Mike began in the supply chain organizations of Quaker Oats, Black & Decker and Honeywell International, leading progressively larger supply chain and distribution operations across consumer goods and diversified manufacturing. He joined Johnson & Johnson in 2001 and spent ten years in senior roles there, including Worldwide Operations Information Management Director at Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Project Director of Global Supply Chain at Ethicon, and Senior Director of Supply Chain Planning for the Medical Devices & Diagnostics sector. That decade gave him direct operating experience of the SG&A, cost-to-serve and channel economics that Six Peaks engagements now work on from the other side of the LSA.

Mike then joined ROi, Mercy's self-distribution organization, as Vice President of Operations and later Chief Solutions Officer, leading growth strategy, strategic sourcing and the solutions function of an operating health system CSC. From there he became Senior Vice President of Healthcare Operations at XPO Logistics, leading the healthcare vertical of a global 3PL, including the start-up and operation of a large health system's consolidated service center and distribution centers for medical device and equipment manufacturers.

On every engagement Mike brings manufacturer-side rigor to LSA program design and the cost-to-serve analysis our approach is built around, and operating depth to implementation. He works from Naples, Florida.
